Area Attractions Venice is one of the most enchanting and romantic cities in the whole world, historically the center of Mediterranean commerce. First time visitors experience a barrage of unique sights, sounds and even smells that invade the canal and side streets. St Mark's Basilica, the Doges Palace and Rialto Bridge span the meandering Grand Canal. The side streets are filled with buildings centuries old and even the tiny canals are alive with the passing of the gondola. Across the Accademia Bridge, you can visit the Gallerie with many masterpieces. Travel by Vaporetti, water buses, is excellent for sightseeing. Gondolas are far more expensive although less so on the smaller canals. To view the stunning lagoon you will need to take the lift up the Campanile, the bell tower, and San Marco. Boat trips can also be booked to Murano, Burano and Torcello. The Mercerie is situated between St Mark's and the Rialto, full of elegant but expensive shops. Alternatively you can visit the market across the Rialto Bridge. The BASILICA DI SAN MARCO is open Mon-Sat 9:45am-5pm, Sun 2-5pm. Entrance fee to the Sanctuary, Pala d'Oro and Treasury is named after the evangelist St Mark whose remains were recovered or stolen, depending on your viewpoint by the Venetians from Alexandria in the 9th century. The then ruler of Venice, Doge Giustiniano Participazio, built a church on this site to house the remains. The original church was destroyed by fire a century later, and was replaced in the late 11th century by the huge ornate edifice we see today. The sumptuous facade has five portals decorated with shimmering mosaics. The only original mosaic - in the doorway to the far left - gives a good idea of the appearance of the basilica in the 13th century. Above the main portal are replicas of the famous bronze horses, thought to be Roman or Hellenistic works of the 3rd or 4th century AD and looted by the Venetians from Constantinople in 1204. They were taken to Paris by Napoleon in 1797 and returned in 1815, and are now kept inside the basilica, protected from pigeons and pollution. The basilica's interior, in the shape of a Greek cross, is thought to have been inspired by the Church of the Apostles in Constantinople. Above the columns of the minor naves, lining the arms of the cross, are the women's galleries or matronei, designed in accordance with Greek Orthodox custom, which separates the sexes. The sumptuous atmosphere of the interior is enhanced by the decoration of the walls: marble slabs cover the lower part, while golden mosaics adorn the vaults, arches and domes. Following a complex iconographic plan, the mosaics cover 4,000 square metres 43,000 square feet, which is why St Mark's is sometimes called the Basilica d'Oro Church of Gold. For a brief explanation of the mosaics, join one of the groups that tour the basilica. Among the many gems housed in the church are the Pala d'Oro, a jewel-studded gold and enamel altarpiece dating from the 10th century. The Treasury also houses a priceless collection of gold and silver from Byzantium. The Marciano Museum same hours as Basilica. Entrance fee, reached by steep steps from the entrance narthex, affords fine views of the interior as a whole, while the open-air terrace beyond the museum gives a bird*s-eye view of Piazza San Marco. It was here that the Doge and other dignitaries gathered to watch celebrations taking place below. The VENICE BIENNALE is an interdisciplinary Cultural Society concerned with visual arts, architecture, dance, music, theatre and cinema. The Biennale organizes exhibitions the International Art Exhibition, the International Architecture Exhibition, and the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica, i.e. the Venice Film Festival and live performances of Dance, Music and Theatre.
